Fluoride is a mineral which is widely used in tap water, toothpaste, mouth rinse and others. It is a naturally occurring substance that helps in removing cavities in teeth and improves oral hygiene. Many people have a fear of fluoride as it is a toxin but is not strongly believed to have any adverse side effects when consumed in small amounts. The amount of fluoride in the water is controlled according to the concentration set by the EPA.

So, does it make a difference in the taste of water to remove fluoride from it?…

Fluoride does not affect the taste of water but to enhance the taste of water you can remove it. There are many ways to remove fluoride from tap water but some of them are hard to implement like filling your water tank with bottled water. Most people prefer homemade ways or inexpensive ways of removal like using a water filter to remove the fluoride.

Is the cheapest way of removing fluoride from tap water to use a water filter?

In 2014 found that in a survey of 37 different countries in the world, India was the country that consumed the least amount of calcium. The countries that consume the highest amount are the US, UK and Ireland.

What is Reverse Osmosis?

At its very basic level, reverse osmosis is the process of forcing water through a membrane to remove contaminants.

Sedimentation

Fluoride removal by precipitation is a two-step process. First, a fluoride-containing sample is mixed with an agent called a co-precipitate. This mixture is then allowed to settle, with the co-precipitate forming a crystal layer on top of the fluoride ions. This crystal layer can be removed from the mixture.

The use of agents that can perform the co-precipitate is important because it is the agent that attracts the fluoride ions, allowing them to form into a crystal. There are a variety of agents that can be used to perform this function. Some of the agents that are ideal for the co-precipitation step include:

  • Calcium fluoride
  • Calcium sulfate
  • Aluminum phosphate
  • Metallic zinc
  • Magnesium phosphate

Calcium silicate is also a good option and is widely used in commercial fluoride removal units.

Aluminum phosphate is one of the agents most recommended for use as a co-precipitate. It can be combined with an ion exchange unit and a reverse-osmosis system to remove a wide range of substances from drinking water. It can not only remove the fluoride ion but also remove many others like lead, hardness minerals, arsenic, nitrates, and chloramine. This is great for a household that has multiple contaminants in its water supply.

Activated Alumina

A simple and cheap way to remove fluoride from your water is to use activated alumina filter media.

Activated alumina works by adsorbing fluoride, to remove it from the water.

If you live in areas where fluoride is present in your water or you live in areas with hard water, you will definitely want to use activated alumina to remove it.

Water Distillation

Distillation is where a boiling vessel is used to create steam which condenses to water. The steam is then drained off. If the steam is collected, purified and then re-added to the boiling vessel to be used again, and the water is then distilled out you have 100% pure distilled water.

This is often used in laboratories where a very pure product is required.

Reverse osmosis involves a membrane which selectively allows through only molecules of a specific size. Water is pumped through a membrane and the pure water is collected on the far side of the membrane (at pressure low enough so that the membrane does not burst) and unwanted molecules or contaminants are rejected at the membrane surface.

Reverse osmosis is used in the food industry to remove salt from water, and in the water industry it is used to purify seawater for drinking.

Although distillation and reverse osmosis are two very different methods of obtaining pure water, purifier companies often make misleading claims which lead the unwary to believe that the two methods are the same. Consumer magazine Which? (UK) tested purifiers which made claims such as "distillation increases water hardness levels" or "reverse osmosis reduces hardness" or "reverse osmosis increases water hardness" and are publishing the results of these tests in their May edition.

Many people choose a Berkey, considering it is the best filter pitcher, because it can hold approximately 5 gallons of water. The downside to Berkey or Medicer is the price, which is more than many people can afford.

The standard pitcher is inexpensive and is cost effective, as you can use it for several months. Some may not have the potency of a Berkey, but you can purchase different filters to maximize your benefit.

Deionization

This is one of the best ways of doing so. It is actually a simple chemical process of using bromine or iodine to remove fluoride from water.

You can either buy deionizing resins and add to the water to remove fluoride, or buy fluoride removal cartridges for the purpose of doing the same job.

You can find these online or at your pet store. Choose a reliable brand. Some of them are quite expensive, however, there are a lot of cheap ones online and some pet stores. Pet stores often go out of business and they pass out supplies to other stores not giving us a clue that it may be old.

Then you will need a simple deionization machine to do the job.

They work by the process of de ionization where after passing the water through the machine in which fluoride is removed completely as it binds to the ion convey if you are using a filter.

The water should pass through a layer of activated carbon before encountering the filter to help remove any bad odor.

You can leave the machine on for 36 hours or so to remove any heavy metals in the water.

Bone Char Carbon

I’m putting this option first because we use a simple carbon filter that is similar to this bone char filter. This works because fluoride is a mineral and minerals are positively charged and attracted to negatively charged carbon. The only difference with this charcoal filter is that it uses bone char instead of the usual regular carbon.

These carbon filters remove up to 90% of the fluoride and can be found at any pet store. We were able to find one local to use by calling around and asking for aquarium filters.

What Doesn't Work to Remove Fluoride from Water?

There are many means of reducing the amount of fluoride in drinking water, but many rely on expensive, lengthy, or carbon-intensive processes. Here are a few we think you should avoid:

Distillation: While consuming distilled water is preferable to water with added fluoride, distillation does not sufficiently reduce fluoride. Distillation is best used when contaminants are volatile, which is not the case with fluoride. Distilling water is also very energy intensive. Therefore, it is important to look for other means of removing fluoride from water before distillation.

Ion Exchange: Ion exchange requires the use of an ion exchange resin, frequently a synthetic polymer. The process is more expensive than most others, particularly because of the cost of the resin. Resins also have a limited lifespan. Additionally, they are the form of fluoride that gets absorbed into the body. Some also have to be replaced more often than others and have to be regularly monitored, which is not consistent with the philosophy of many homesteaders. However, ion exchange technology is the most common form of water treatment. Most drinking water in the western world passes through an ion exchange water softener.

Boiling water Doesn't Work!

There are many myths about how to remove fluoride from water. Many people think of boiling water and filtering it through a coffee filter to remove the fluoride. Others believe that filtering the water through activated charcoal will get rid of fluoride. None of these methods work. Boiling water will not remove fluoride and neither will activated charcoal. Activated charcoal will remove the chlorine and that's all. The most effective method for removing fluoride from water is reverse osmosis.

Iron Filter

Some types of iron filters have been approved by the EPA for the removal of fluorides and other harmful substances found in water.

The products remove the chemicals through oxidation. The oxidation process causes the chemical to lose its harmful potential and they help to absorb the minerals in the water, thus, producing odorless, tasteless drinking water for your bath and kitchen.

The advantage of an iron filter is its capacity to remove other toxic substances from water, such as aluminum, fluoride, copper, chlorine, cadmium, lead and iron (toxic iron), and the metallic odors and tastes that are caused by the fluorides.

Water Softener

Bathroom sink faucets and showerheads usually use the highest concentrations of fluoride. You can remove the fluoride from the water they dispense using a well-known but cheap, natural product. A countertop or sink can be made from granite. Granite contains about 15 to 20 percent quartz, which has the unique ability to attract and hold fluoride.
