Determine the Cycle and Detergent
The first step is to determine what type of material your mop head is, and thus what cycle and detergent you will use when washing. Most mop heads are constructed of cotton, or a cotton and polyester blend. A smaller number are made of vinyl. Harder materials such as plastic, metal, aluminum, or rubber are basically impervious to washing and should be thrown away if they have been traumatized by water. Here are a few practical guidelines for cycle selection.
Regular Detergent: Depending on the hardness of your water and the nature of your jobs, you may find yourself using your mop more often than not. If you do a fair amount of dirty work you will get your mop soiled with grime and bodily fluids that are difficult to remove with soap. You might use your mop every day or even every job. These stains should be treated with regular detergent. Wash your mop with at least one regular load of dirty clothes to serve as a pre-wash. Then wash it in hot water on a normal cycle with regular detergent. This cycle is also used when cleaning diapers and other similarly dirty laundry.
Set the Mop Into The Machine
Place the mop head into your washer drum. Place it so that the mop head loop is on the top, and the handle is on the bottom.
This position will prevent the mop head from getting tangled in the drum and getting damaged in the washer. If the handle is on the bottom, the washer will roll the mop head around in the drum and it will most likely get caught in the inner basket.
